Introduction

Canberra Quilters Inc. was formed in 1976 to promote the art and craft of patchwork in Canberra.

Most of the members enjoy patchwork and quilting as a hobby. There are a number of professional quilt makers, authors, journalists and teachers among the membership.

Meetings are held each month from February to November for the Daytime Meetings, and for February to December for the Evening Meetings. Members of Canberra Quilters Inc. enjoy a number of activities at meetings including guest speakers, show and tell, a lending library and supper or morning tea.

Canberra Quilters Inc. also offers an annual exhibition, a full palette of workshops each year, an annual retreat, a teacher accreditation program and a quilt valuation service.

Canberra Quilters Inc. is the oldest patchwork group in Australia. Founded in 1976 by Margaret Rolfe and some friends as "The Patchwork Group,". From this fledgling group which met in members’ homes, the group has grown steadily over two decades and now boasts a membership of around 500.

Canberra Quilters Inc. has a wide-ranging membership, from the beginning quilter to the professional quilter. Many of our members have gained distinctions and awards throughout Australia and internationally, have had work featured in publications in Australia and overseas, as well as having written well-known patchwork and quilting books.

Aims & Objectives

The aims and objectives of Canberra Quilters Inc. are to:

  • promote the art and craft of patchwork and quilting;
  • bring together people interested in patchwork and quilting;
  • encourage and maintain high standards of workmanship and design in both traditional and contemporary patchwork and quilting;
  • foster interest in the history of patchwork and quilting;
  • organise exhibitions;
  • publish a newsletter.

We encourage all members to read our quarterly newsletter Connecting Threads to keep up to date with the activities of the group. Contributions to the newsletter are always very welcome. We also encourage members to share their quilts in Show and Tell at meetings where everyone's work is valued and appreciated.

We encourage new members to purchase a name badge from the Membership Secretary and to wear it to all meetings and other occasions when we meet together.
