Sandstone Cloak
PAMELA FITZSIMONS, MT VINCENT, NSW

Silk and linen fabrics; silk threads; wool batting.
Plant dyeing, machine piecing, hand stitching.
85 cm H x 76 cm W

This piece refers to an early form of Australian patchwork — the possum skin cloak and the skin rugs which continued to be made up until the 1930s. Silks, dyed with eucalyptus leaves and pieced together, produce a surface reminiscent of the sandstone walls of my house. The stitching process records the passing of time and echoes the cycles of nature.
