The Catalogue

The Canberra Quilters Inc. Library must have one the largest collections of patchwork and quilting books in the country. There is over 1100 items! We have over 750 books, 400 magazines, 7 videos, and one set of slides. The Librarian, Susan Blood, has recently completed the large task of entering all information into a computerised catalogue.

The Library Catalogue (as at February 2003) can be viewed here, maybe you can browse to see which things you would like to borrow next month...

The Library's home is a set of crates in a cupboard of the evening meeting venue. At each monthly meeting, the crates are removed and the items are on display for browsing and borrowing. Despite the makeshift nature of the library - and the many people who come and go from the group, the library books have been well cared for and are in good repair.

What is purchased for the Library?

Three factors are important in our decision-making :

  1. There are just so many delicious books out there and selecting items has become a harder and harder job.
  2. We are facing a falling Australian dollar, and so we can buy fewer items than before.
  3. The Library is a vital part of Canberra Quilters - both as a resource for existing members, and as a major contributing factor urging new people to join the organization.

Thus it is more important than ever that we build the collection both purposefully and carefully. To this end the Committee is working on a Collection Development Policy which will guide the development of the Library as the group continues to grow.

The policy is still being written, but includes the following principles:

  1. That we purchase ALL books as they are published from certain key publishers
  2. That we purchase ALL significant Australian books
  3. That we subscribe to all Australian patchwork and quilting magazines, and also as many major overseas titles as funds allow.
